In 2024, the heart-wrenching tale of Obie, a lovable dog abandoned and left tied to a tree, captured public attention.

After being rescued and brought to the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter, Obie’s future seemed uncertain as he awaited a forever home. Now, there’s heartwarming news to share.

On April 22, a passerby stumbled upon Obie tethered to a tree in the Frank Niederwerfer Wildlife Sanctuary located in South Windsor, Connecticut.

Although the abandoned dog was mostly healthy, his reddened eyes and discomfort from a tight collar were concerning, as reported by CT Insider. Initially tagged as “Kobe,” his name was later changed to Obie when he was taken in by the shelter.

At the Tyler Regional Animal Care Shelter, Obie received essential care, including neutering, microchipping, and vaccinations. Despite his past ordeal, the shelter staff described him as a sweet and friendly dog.

“His eyes are almost healed, and he is learning manners and personal space,” the shelter shared on their Facebook page, adding that Obie “LOVES all the attention from everyone he meets.”

Following the discovery, authorities launched an investigation, leading Janiya Bradford, a 26-year-old from Manchester, Connecticut, to turn herself in. According to NBC Connecticut, she was charged with animal cruelty.

As Obie awaited adoption, the shelter prioritized finding the perfect home, acknowledging his dislike for men and the need for a female-only household where he could feel secure.

After several attempts and meet-and-greets, which didn’t quite match Obie’s needs, patience finally paid off.

Exactly 60 days after his arrival at the shelter, the staff had great news: Obie found his ideal forever home. His new owner met all the criteria the shelter had laid out for his adoption.

In a follow-up post, the shelter shared how Obie was adapting wonderfully to his new routine and being welcomed by his new canine sibling, Lovebug. “It’s happy endings like this that make the long wait worth it!” they wrote.
