Rescued Dog Violet Embarks on a Journey to Healing and Home in New Mexico

In New Mexico’s Miguel County, a dog named Violet has started a journey towards a better life, thanks to the efforts of a local animal rescue organization. Violet, along with five other dogs, was discovered in December 2016, chained and neglected.

A passerby noticed the troubling situation and alerted the Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico. Following this, the county’s sheriff department took action, leading to the rescue of these dogs.

Angela Stell, the founder and director of NMDOG, explained how Violet’s condition clearly indicated long-term neglect. Her neck was chafed from a heavy chain, and she was malnourished and sunburned.

Upon further investigation, authorities discovered that the owner, who could not be present for the dogs due to unrelated legal issues, had left them abandoned.

Once NMDOG intervened, Violet and her companions were taken to a veterinary clinic for medical care. Violet in particular was found to suffer from flystrike, a distressing condition where maggots feed on an animal’s skin.

Despite her rough start, Violet is now on the mend and gradually learning to trust humans, although she remains a bit timid due to past traumas.

“Violet is slowly warming up to people and showing her sweet side,” Stell shared. “She enjoys her stuffed toys and relishes the opportunity to learn about the world beyond the confines of her chain.”

One of Violet’s simple joys includes playing with her first ever toy, a squeaky raccoon, bringing a glimpse of playfulness to her life.

As Violet’s recovery continues, NMDOG is preparing her for adoption. A future home for Violet should prioritize her well-being by keeping her indoors most of the time to prevent further sunburn.

Stell hopes for a family that will treat Violet like a cherished member.

Potential adopters who believe they can provide Violet with a loving forever home are encouraged to reach out to NMDOG. The organization also welcomes donations to support their mission in rescuing and caring for more animals in need.
