From Puerto Rico Strays to Forever Home: A Heartwarming Journey of Puppy Rescue

A remarkable act of kindness unfolded in Puerto Rico when a man named Gamaliel, despite having limited means, discovered two ailing puppies and went to great lengths to ensure their well-being.

Gamaliel is well-known in his community for feeding stray cats, as recounted by Chelsey Williams, the founder of Souls of Satos, a dog shelter in Dorado.

During one of his feeding routines in Barceloneta, he came across the puppies, whom he later named Snow and Shylah. The puppies, just 7 to 8 weeks old at the time, were alone, homeless, and in dire condition.

Gamaliel took the puppies into his care, trying his best to nurse them back to health.

However, with limited resources, he could not provide the veterinary care they required. When Snow and Shylah’s condition worsened, he reached out to Chelsey Williams for help.

Despite living two hours away, Chelsey agreed to arrange veterinary care for the puppies. Upon examination, the puppies were diagnosed with a severe case of scabies, a skin condition caused by parasites.

Chelsey noted, “It is one of the worst cases I have seen in my life. They were broken, scared, and not feeling well.” Throughout their recovery at the hospital, the puppies found comfort in each other, often sleeping snuggled together.

After their hospital stay, Snow and Shylah returned to Gamaliel, who provided them with the love and care they needed while Chelsey sought a permanent home for them in the United States.

“We never adopt puppies in Puerto Rico because the situation is very bad,” Chelsey explained. She contacted AMA Animal Rescue, a New York-based shelter, which agreed to help.

The puppies were flown to the United States, where, initially frightened in their transport crates, their spirits lifted upon seeing each other again.

Michele Walsh, director of AMA Animal Rescue, recalled, “From that moment, I knew they could not be separated; they would have to be adopted together.”

The pair quickly found a home with a loving couple named Joannie and Robb, who renamed them Jethro and Abby. Their new family embraced them with joy
