The dog locked in the cage weighed only seven pounds. Her skeleton was visible through her skin, and she was too weak to stand on her own four legs.
A woman discovered the dog abandoned at one of her rental properties. When she called the veterinary clinic to ask if she could bring her in, no one was prepared for what came through the doors.
Madison Ellis, a vet technician, watched as they carried in what barely looked like a living animal. The dog, later named Hazel, couldn’t walk. She couldn’t eat. She couldn’t even relieve herself without help. Ellis had to manually express her bladder for the entire first week.
“We really didn’t think she was going to make it,” Ellis said. “She was so bad.”
The team gave her IV fluids, medications, and carefully scheduled feedings. They decided to give her the weekend to see if she would show any signs of improvement. By Monday morning, Hazel was already trying to stand.
That first spark of fight changed everything.
By the end of her first week, she could take a few shaky steps before falling. By the third week, she was walking on her own. Within two months, she had gained ten pounds and was running, jumping, and playing with the other dogs.
Ellis couldn’t let her go. She adopted Hazel herself.
“Every day I get home she greets me with a toy and a wiggling butt,” Ellis said.
The video of Hazel’s transformation went viral on TikTok, reaching over 4.7 million views. Viewers were stunned.
“It literally looks like she’s decaying in the first picture,” one comment read. “It’s incredible that she survived.”
