Working as a police officer involves more than just law enforcement; it often includes unexpected and challenging situations that require decisive action and compassion.
While officers are trained to handle emergencies and assist people in distress, they sometimes extend their helping hand to animals in need too. This story is one such instance.
Deputies James Gettings and Troy Glover were in Fort Pierce, Florida, on a routine assignment, delivering civil process paperwork.
As they prepared to depart, an unusual, distressed sound caught their attention. The urgent cry led them to investigate further, hoping to find its source.

According to a post on the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, the deputies traced the noise to a septic drain on an abandoned lot.
Inside, they discovered a small puppy, soaked and shivering, stuck in the drain with only his head above water.
Acting quickly, the officers approached the frightened animal, who was initially reluctant to be rescued. With gentle persistence and a catch pole, they lifted the puppy out of harm’s way and into safety.

Realizing the pup needed immediate care, the deputies cleaned him up, offering comfort and warmth. The thought of leaving him alone again was not an option.
Determined to find the owner’s home, they checked with the local neighborhood, but the puppy remained unrecognized and without a guardian.
Amidst the search, Deputy Gettings decided that the fragile pup shouldn’t end up in a shelter. Following his instincts, he chose to adopt the little one himself, believing it was the best decision for the puppy’s future.

The puppy, later named Puddle, received medical attention for his injured back legs and soon found love and security in his new environment.
Deputy Gettings, alongside his wife Rachael, their young daughter Evelyn, and their basset hound Lacie, welcomed Puddle into their home.

Describing Puddle’s new lifestyle, Gettings shared in an interview, “He mostly likes to lounge around. He loves being home.”
Puddle’s journey from a perilous situation to a nurturing home underscores the profound impact of timely intervention and the compassionate choice of a family to open their doors and hearts.
