From Neglect to Hope: Cala the Guard Dog’s Miraculous Transformation and Survival Journey
In many parts of the world, having guard dogs is commonplace, with these animals often appearing intimidating as they keep watch.
However, those who encountered Cala, a guard dog at a car dealership in San Jose, Costa Rica, experienced feelings of sadness rather than fear.
Cala lived under the ownership of someone who barely fed her and neglected her medical needs when she fell ill.

Over time, she became so weak that she couldn’t stand, spending her days resting her head in an old car tire, confined by a short chain wrapped around her neck which caused painful wounds.
As Cala’s health continued to deteriorate, she faced difficulties breathing, alongside other serious health issues. It seemed her future was bleak until a neighbor, noticing her dire state, took action.
They reached out to the police, who then contacted the local animal shelter, Territorio de Zaguates, for help. The shelter agreed to rescue Cala, although it was no easy task.

Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, was moved by Cala’s situation. She shared with The Dodo, “I felt desperately sad and frustrated.
The picture I first saw of her showed a pitiful creature robbed of its dignity and ready to give up—a dog whose spirit had been broken.”
Thanks to the efforts of the police and the shelter, Cala was taken away from her neglectful owner and received immediate medical care for her injuries, particularly the deep wounds caused by the chain around her neck.

After her initial treatment, Cala was moved to Territorio de Zaguates to begin her physical and emotional recovery.
Healing was slow and challenging for Cala. She wasn’t comfortable around other dogs at the shelter, likely having no previous interactions with them.
Some volunteers believed she might have been trained to be aggressive toward other animals. Despite these concerns, Cala gradually started to trust and get along with other dogs.

Over time, Cala transformed from a frail and despondent creature into a robust and self-assured dog. “With every day that passed, we saw more of her personality come through,” explained Battle.
“She went from fearing humans to trusting them and even seeking out their attention.”
Cala’s journey, however, wasn’t entirely smooth. In June, the shelter faced a crisis when intruders poisoned 16 dogs with tainted sausages.

Although Cala also ate one, she survived—possibly due to her size compared to the amount consumed. This incident left her with temporary neurological issues, but soon enough she bounced back, proving her resilience once again.
Having endured years of hardship, from neglect to starvation, Cala’s survival is nothing short of miraculous. While countless dogs never get a second chance, Cala’s remarkable recovery has inspired many, providing a source of warmth and hope.
Today, Cala thrives in a foster home, receiving the love and care she once lacked. Meanwhile, Lya Battle continues her mission to rescue more dogs, but Cala’s story holds a special place in her heart.
