Rescue Group Saves Weimaraner Gilbert Grape From Euthanasia, Inspiring Recovery and Happy Home
A devoted animal rescue group recently sprung into action when they learned about a Weimaraner in critical condition at a high-risk shelter.
This dog, known as Gilbert Grape, was found suffering from a massive tumor on his belly, struggling to even stand.
The story of Gilbert Grape was shared by Keri Pink, who works in media relations for Tickled Pink Weimaraner Rescue (TPWR). She detailed the rescue and recovery journey that the determined team embarked on for this resilient canine.

It was on a scorching Arizona summer day, with temperatures exceeding 95 degrees, that local animal control picked up a stray male Weimaraner.
Upon his arrival at the county’s high-kill shelter, he was placed in isolation—a grim holding area where animals often face euthanasia due to illness or behavioral issues.
The shelter’s protocol allows stray animals to remain unassessed for 72 hours in hopes their owners might reclaim them.
However, through a special program, recognized rescue organizations could intervene and transfer animals needing urgent medical care.
When two dedicated volunteers alerted TPWR, the rescue organization quickly responded. Gilbert Grape, named for the grape-like tumor protruding from his chest, was swiftly taken to a 24-hour veterinary hospital.
There, it was determined he needed immediate stabilization, including blood transfusions and intravenous support, for a potentially life-saving surgery.
The expected cost for Gilbert’s care was approximately $7,000. For the rescue team and the veterinary staff, saving his life was a priority, although it highlighted the delicate balance rescue organizations face between necessary care and available resources.
Unlike private pet owners who decide independently, rescues often rely on the support of the general public to fund their efforts.
Despite his uncertain health background and an age estimated around seven, Gilbert’s blood tests were largely normal, apart from a heightened white blood cell count attributed to the infected tumor.
“We saw a spark in Gilbert’s eyes and felt he deserved a chance,” shared Keri. To fund this chance, TPWR turned to social media, sharing Gilbert’s story and quickly raising necessary contributions.
Following a successful surgery and brief stay in the intensive care unit, Gilbert was discharged just two days later. A subsequent pathology report confirmed that his 12-pound tumor was benign—a non-cancerous lipoma.
With a clean bill of health, Gilbert was on the road to recovery, although he faced muscle loss and physical imbalances from the prolonged burden of the tumor.
To aid his rehabilitation, Gilbert was set to start physical therapy, including exercises, massages, and aquatic therapy. Despite his initial physical frailty, his lively and good-natured personality began shining daily in his foster home.
Gilbert’s story captured the hearts of many, leading to adoption applications, although he wasn’t quite ready for his forever home just yet. However, his prospects were bright.
A year later, Gilbert was thriving in a loving home that catered perfectly to his needs, including access to a pool for ongoing water therapy to address issues like hip dysplasia. He integrated well with his new family, living a happy and fulfilled life.
Since Gilbert’s rescue in 2013, TPWR continues to make a significant impact, helping dogs that need special attention, are critically ill, or like Gilbert, who urgently need care.
